Geocaching on Guemes Island

 Geocaching on Guemes Island

At the end of this post is a short video about Geocaching.

Geocaching on Guemes Island can be a fun full day event for all. No need to even take your car across on the Guemes Island Ferry. If you are feeling real adventures and in fairly good shape, you can walk or bike ride to find the stash. Just make sure you have water and extra clothing for the weather. You can stop and eat breakfast or lunch at Anderson’s General Store on Guemes. They have a great café inside the store with dinning outside on the deck. If you want to make a weekend of it then check out Guemes Island Resort.

Now you’re set for the adventure of Geocashing on Guemes. Prior to starting make very sure you have what is needed to locate the stash. You must go to Geocaching.com and read up on the Guidelines for Geocaching. It is very important you respect the land you tread on and any private property signs. When you check out the geocaches on the website you will get information on location and any other notes about the stash. To get started just follow the Easy Steps to Geocaching.

  1. Register for a free Basic Membership.
  2. Click “Hide & Seek a Cache.”
  3. Enter your postal code and click “search.”
  4. Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name.
  5. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device.
  6. Use your GPS device to assist you in finding the hidden geocache.
  7. Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.
  8. Share your geocaching stories and photos online.

Many smart phones like the Blackberry or Iphone have applications you can down load that work very will. Some are free to use or have a limited try out time. Recently I went on a Geocach hunt called Vanished Shipyard. The location is on the south end of the island and fairly close to the Guemes Island Ferry. You will hike a great trail to the beach on the Peach Preserve. Check out all the details at the Geocaching website if you would like to hunt the Vanished Shipyards. The trail is very easy to hike with not very many inclines. It is not wheelchair accessible. There is some parking at the trailhead off the side of the road. This one would make a great day hike just by walking on to the Guemes Island Ferry. Just park you car on the Anacortes side and walk on to the ferry. Let the hunt start!

I have attached some images of the adventure. However I do not want to give away where the stash is so no more information.
